Story of my life.

It’s called an internship, ppl

many people don’t have the resources or connections for internships

also internships do roughly zip for you if you’re looking for a job, ANY job, and everything entry-level, even retail and foodservice, is requiring experience

my roommate was unemployed for six months and all the internships in the world wouldn’t have helped her because even coffeeshops were requiring multiple years of experience

I’ve got experience and I STILL get this when i apply for jobs.  “Well we want /console/ experience to work on a console game.”  *flips tables*

Unpaid Internships in particular are also part of a really alarming creeping trend of getting people desperate to get a foot in the door to do work for free. Many artists, especially in the tumblr community, are working to spread information that their work should be monetarily compensated rather than promised a nebulous reward of “exposure.” But this isn’t just a vital rule for artists, it should also be a guideline for anyone who does any sort of work for someone else. The US Department of Labor has a particular series of guidelines regarding internships, ALL of which must be met for the employer to be exempt from paying the intern.

But even if they do meet all the criteria, the current US economic squeeze has spurred intense scrutiny of Internship practices as a whole. As more people do more tasks for non-existent compensation and companies race to the bottom of the wage scale, lawsuits are cropping up in which former interns who broke their asses, and were paid nothing demand some compensation.
